The giant capybara resembles a giant guinea pig about 6 to 8 feet long. Coloration is usually reddish-brown to gray on the upper body and yellowish-brown on the underbelly; a black coloration sometimes occurs on the face, outer surface of the limbs, and rump.
The giant capybara inhabits forests with dense vegetation around ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, and swamps. It rarely strays more than a few hundred feet from water.
The giant capybara is active in the morning and evening, resting in a shallow bed in the ground during the day. Its diet consists of water plants, tree bark, and cultivated crops (when available). The giant capybara is most often encountered in a prehistoric setting.
